Hello Working World :)

Hello! Long time no see. I'm a working girl now :) Finally got my in-principal-letter-of-approval for Training Employment Pass (is there a difference with Employment Pass?). Thank God. I've been waiting for this for very long!

Today I downloaded a statistical freeware called "R". My goodness, I've never thought that a psychology graduate also needs to know programming :(:( Anyway, I'm kinda excited to self-study this. I should learn Matlab too, while I'm working here...hehehehe..It's because my colleague who's currently working in the adult bilingualism project needs to use Matlab. Even though I don't need it in my project, I think it's good to learn :)

Initially I feel that there's no 'life' as a working person, but I think things start to work out. Today I finally reached home early enough to mop the floors, (still) unpack stuff, and mop again because my roommate sneezed because of the dust from the unpacked stuff. Three of us also had chance to sit and drink wine. Hahahaha. I did some ironing and tidying-up too :)

I mentioned to Paul and Daryl that I'm thinking to take up lessons, like dancing lesson or any other lesson, just to keep my brain 'works'. For now, the limitation is money. Hahaha. I also still need time to store my energy :P But I think I seriously want to learn something else after work :) Let's see. I should start while I still have the spirit.

Unlike my undergraduate life (my goodness, it feels so far...),I can sleep little, yet feel energetic. Hahaha. Usually 6-hour-sleep is enough for me, but now, 6-hour sleep feels little. Hahaha.. Oh but slowly I think I gain my strength (thanks to Divine Intervention, felt physically and mentally fresh after yesterday's mass). I don't know how I had 2 CCAs back to back before. Now after work I just feel so tired. Oh but I think the difference is I really try to focus during work (unlike during undergrad when I can choose to take a nap anytime, including during lectures :P)

The good things about working:
1. No need to think about homework
2. For my current job, I look at it as an opportunity to learn more. It's like another thesis for me :)
3. I MUST think of practical things, not only theory. From 'simple thing' such as cutting shoe boxes to the size that I want, designing a chute-box for experiment (thanks to Krizia and Paul!), to stuff like knowing what statistical analyses to use (argggggggghhhhhhh....all the stats modules goneee!!)

bad things:
1. I cannot take a nap
2. I MUST wake up early every day (no more 2 days afternoon classes :P)

but but..at the end of the day, I think working life is an opportunity to practice virtues (just like studying!). No wonder they said we can sanctify our work and study. It's difficult, but it's possible :):)

and I'm happy to say that I find meaning in my work :) Thank God :)

Time for yourself

So here I am..
chatting..
facebooking and stalking people..
writing blog again..finally! :)

I guess it's always good to spare some time for yourself, so you can reflect and internalize 'stuff', so you don't feel like you're always rushing here and there.

Time for yourself..
the danger of giving too much time to myself is falling into idleness, laziness, and at the end, sadness, because of the silence.
Let's reflect some stuff about working life.
I do think working life makes you 'older'. It doesn't necessarily mean you'll be more mature, but the 8hour-air conditioned room, lack of interaction with people, 8hour-in front of laptop, make me feel older than my actual age. Hahaha.
I know that every job can't be separated from paper work, but for me, personally, I want the fieldwork proportion to be larger than the paperwork part. I'm looking forward to meeting people!Ah by the way, I'm working as Research Assistant. My project is on bilingualism.
Oh another by the way, Research Assistant is not a well-paid job. Well, according to my mom's mathematics, actually I'll be paid very well considering the 4-working-day requirement, but my first impression was I can't stop comparing myself with my roommate, or whoever my friend who are paid higher. I SMS my mom, "No wonder people laughed at me when I chose psychology. You are not even a psychologist yet even though you study psychology. Moreover, unlike people who graduate from engineering, you are paid lower."
then I hit my own head after that (imagine only, not seriously hit my head, hahaha), I shouldn't think like that...
ya..I knew it..I knew it that I want to have ideals and follow this ideal..it's not about the good salary..
remember your dream, Ferninda. Remember, ok? :)

Candi Borobudur

This was my third time visiting Candi Borobudur, but it's always as amazing as before.Nothing much to talk about Candi Borobudur. Ohhh,..I would say that the guide spoke good English :)

The most frequently captured scene, but I can't take a good shot :P

Mr Guide: take panorama picture from here...

Arghhhh..got  Daryl there!!hahaha

Gua Maria Tritis

Hello..here is the long awaited story about Gua Maria Tritis, the most memorable shrine that I visited last May. It might not be as elaborately decorated like shrines in Europe, but the fact that this shrine is a natural cave really makes this shrine special. The journey to this shrine from the centre of Yogyakarta takes around 3 hours through mountainous area. One of our friends got motion sickness because of the never-ending-turning-road. The shrine was built in 1974.

The place was very quiet. To reach the shrine, you can choose either to take shortcut and park your car near the top, or you can do way of the cross from below. Along the way, there were old ladies offering us to rent their umbrellas. They kept following us even though we said we didn't want, but they didn't ask for money at the end.

death

Hi. Long time no see. Let me write a quick post now.
Last week my friend's mom passed away and last night my mom's friend passed away. There's something different this time. I felt close to both of them. I have not met my friend's mom, but the fact that she is MY FRIEND's mom, not my mom's friend's mom, made me feel close with the person who passed away. And for the case of mom's friend, I just met him last month. I thank God that my mom strongly insisted that I had to meet him when I was in Jogja.

I'm sad...
I mean..he's my mom's good friend. When our families went to Jogja when I was secondary school, he was the one who brought us around. When my grandma passed away, Om Petrus (my mom's friend) came all the way from Jogja to help us. He was the one helping me to write an English essay for a competition when I was high school. I sometimes can't believe that I just met him LAST MONTH, though I knew he was already very sick at that time.

Sometimes it's scary...
You grow up and the people around you are growing old. When I hugged my grandma last month, I hoped God grant her health and long life and I pray that when the day comes, I want to be with her.

Yogyakarta 1-6 May 2012

The last time when I went to Yogyakarta was when I was secondary school. This time I went to Yogyakarta with Legion of Mary friends, some from NUS, and some from other praesidia (Robin's friends).

On the first day we went to Taman Sari. It was a bathing compound for the king's family, but it was not really interesting now. It's just a complex. I think if I went there with Prof John Miksic, he would explain to us lots of interesting things about the complex. Hehehe.

I haven't taken shower now, so to make the story short, I'll talk about the most memorable places in Yogyakarta.

1. Gua Maria Tritis (one of the shrine of Our Lady), Gunung Kidul
It was my first time going there and I was amazed by the beauty of the shrine. It is a huge cave with stalactites. Unfortunately, I do not know the story about this shrine, but Robin said that Our Lady appeared to a little boy here.

2. Candi Borobodur
I've just realized that the carvings there were so beautiful. Observing how many pictures I took in this ancient temple (thanks to the guide who recommended various good spots), I think this monument is still number one tourist attraction for me in Yogyakarta.

3. Gua Maria Sendangsono (Sendang = lake, Sono = a name of tree, water coming from a tree)
Unlike my previous pilgrimage with my family, this time we walked the long way for station of cross. The route in Cisantana was actually more difficult, but the weather was hotter in Sendangsono.

More stories to come....
