warzone (again!)

I love writing thesis - yeay!!

These few days, I've been accompanied by Thai songs when I wrote my draft
I'm a 'hardcopy- person'. It's not that I do not love the earth, but my eyes easily get tired when I read things on computer. Hence, I always print all the journal articles needed for my thesis.

Today was the deadline of my first draft of thesis. Surprisingly, the word count was 14,000 words ++ (exceeded the limit), but I think it's because Ms Word counted the words in the tables too. I foresee that I'll need to revise lots of things from this first draft (just like when I submitted my first introduction draft), but I thank God that He helped me to survive this week!!

I had my Thai grammar test this afternoon and I was kinda unprepared, but because the teacher discussed the mock test before the real test, I could recall the words that were taught by her!! :):) Ahhh..really thank God for today and this week :)

The coming of recess week means that there are only 7 weeks left of lecture + 1 week of reading week + 8 days of exams (I only have 3 exams and the last one will end on the 8th day of exam week). After that, that's it! Good bye, NUS.

I still hope to do postgraduate study, but I told people, "Only if I 'miraculously' finished my proposal". The thesis is very time-consuming (I love it though :) ) and I hardly even have time to study my modules. There's this weird feeling in my heart, looking forward for recess week even though I know it'll be studying week for me. I miss reading textbook though :P hahaha. Studying other modules have really become a break from thesis.

The reason I put 'so much' effort for my thesis is now I'm considering to apply postgrad research in NUS and I hope I can work with my supervisor again. (Actually I feel that I'm still not hardworking enough). I don't know how feasible it is to do part time research and work at the same time, but I want to earn money too to go to Brazil in 2013 for World Youth Day. HAHAHAHA :)

Let's talk about postcard

After 5 weeks struggling with Japanese history, last Thursday we started to talk about material culture in Japanese Studies lecture. It was so interesting! The lecturer talked about how the postcards can tell use about how other countries looked at Japan during the Japan-Russia war. He showed us a lot of images of postcards in that era. Some postcards reflected how Japan was considered equal with the Western world, some others perceived Japan as nobody that needed to be taken seriously. The postcards also reminded me on Dom's lecture last semester on poster and comics and politics!!

I think studying material culture is very interesting. When we talk about material culture, it means something that we use in every day's life (eg postcard!). It's interesting how this 'little stuff' can talk a lot about history and the society in one period of time. When I took Southeast Asian studies modules, we used similar approaches with Japanese studies. As an illustration, when I took 'Urban and Cities Life of Southeast Asia', I learned how different architecture of mosque in different period of time in Malaysia can tell us about the relationship between national identity and Islam throughout the history of Malaysia. When I took 'Thai painting', I learned how mural painting can tell us about the life of the people around the temple. When I took 'Marketing Southeast Asia Heritage', I learned how the findings of various potteries around Old Parliament House and Fort Canning can prove that Singapore history is far beyond Raffles' arrival. Interesting, right?

Let's go back to postcard.
On my way to Thai class today, I grabbed some free postcards from the cafe near LT11. One of my seniors, Imma, likes to write and receive postcard. So yeah...perhaps it's time to start writing to her again :) There was one time I talked to my friend and I told him, last time life and the virtues of Saints can be traced through their letters. I guess similar thing might not happen to emails -.- (except you keep their emails!) So I told myself to keep my friends postcards and letters, just in case one day there's a canonization cause for my friends, then if I'm still alive, I can show the postcards and letters and how virtuous they are. Hehehehe...

Good morning, world

I'm going to sleep..
zzzzzz....

good morning :)

welcome sleepless nights :)

just try to keep myself awake looking at the mean item differences, copy pasting tables, digging citations :)

welcome sleepless nights :)

Let's talk about weird things that you do

I do 'weird things' in the last few days. One of the weird things is smiling alone. When you walk alone, your neutral expression is 'stoning' or anything but either negative expression or expressionless. However, I'm not a person who can hide my feeling. If some things make me happy, I will smile and I can't hide my smile even when I walk alone in MRT :)

At the same time, I can't also hide my disappointment. I was quite upset when the florist near Clementi said that they don't have 'normal flower' today (they only sold nicely-wrapped-and-expensive roses). I was like, "whaaat???" (only in my heart), so I went all the way to market near Seng Shiong to buy 'normal flower'. I couldn't hide my disappointment. When I said 'Thank you' to the florist near Clementi, the tone was super upset. hahaha.

Let's talk about thesis

Thank God for today's productive.
I've wasted lots of time, yet I have been able to sit for hours to write my thesis. Really really thank God :)
I've been changing the playlist from Thai songs to Indo songs back to Thai songs to sustain me sitting here.

Break time: doing citation!! woohooooo..
To-do-list:
1. Run some 'other analysis'
2. Tidy up the tables
3. Read and re-read the sentences. Read and re-read other journal articles. (I know it, my writings still sucks!)

Achievement of the day:
I already feel comfortable with the structure of my result and discussion and have been able to compare with previous studies. Really really thank God :):)

Let's talk about Valentine's Day

Next Tuesday is Valentine's Day. I'm quite curious whether we have St. Valentine in Catholic Church like the stories that spread out about the origin of this day.

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15254a.htm
The article from the link above mentioned briefly about three different martyrs with the name St Valentine.

Anyway, I feel that after I come to Singapore, Valentine's Day is just an ordinary day. Hahaha. At least when I was in high school in Indo, me and my friends used to send SMS to each other to say "Happy Valentine's Day!"
Let me write about some memorable Valentine's Day experience. (Don't expect candle light dinner story! Hahaha)

The first that came to my mind was in fact my primary-school-Valentine's Day-experience. Why? Because it was still puppy love HAHAHA (In Indo, we say 'monkey love', not 'puppy love'). It was quite a funny experience because you did not dare to give chocolate directly to the person you like, so you ask someone to give the chocolate to your 'target'.

The second that came to my mind was in high school, there was one time the teachers took all chocolates/ gifts that we brought to school. In my school, there was a regulation that prohibited us to bring 'stuff-unrelated-with-school' (including birthday present). Of course we did bring prohibited items in normal days (but if the teachers didn't check, they wouldn't know), but on that Valentine's Day, the teachers checked our bags on purpose. Of course we brought a lot of prohibited items on that day, however, the incident became quite 'hot' because unhappy students wrote rude things to the teacher who was kinda in charge of this bag-check and put it on board that was supposed to be a board for Valentine's day greeting. After school, we gathered in function hall and the principal talked about how we should have empathy for flood victim (Jakarta was flooding that time), and so on and so forth. Students were still unhappy. The next day we were asked to gather again and this time it was the nun who talked to us. After that, (wah so many follow-ups), the student leaders had to stay back. (looong story)
Anyway, yah..it was quite memorable.

The third that I remember was Valentine's Day in 2010. No..actually the memorable day was 1 day before Valentine's Day (because in that year, Valentine's Day was on the same day with Chinese New Year). On 13 Feb 2010, me and my best friends went out to watch 'Valentine's Day'. The rule was we must wear dress/ anything-not-shirt-and-jeans and put make-up as if we're going for first date. Hahahaha. Mission failed. I went home to Indonesia in that week (it was recess week) without bringing my cosmetics. My mom didn't even have loose powder. (I inherit my mom's habit not-to-put-make-up) The only thing I could find was blush-on and lip gloss.

Another Valentine's Day that I remember was loong time ago (not sure when, I think secondary school or sometime in high school) when my mom gave me a little white bear with 'I love you'. I remember she told me, "Since I know no one will give you present, I'll give you this." Hahahaha. The sentence sounds sad, but that time I didn't feel sad. I felt happy because my mom was really thoughtful :P The bear is still in my bedroom in Indo.

This year's Valentine's Day is on Tuesday, so we'll have Legion meeting. Special day with Mother Mary :):) Hehehe...

I don't like the commercialization of Valentine's Day, but I think it's always good to do something special to someone special (your best friend, your teacher, your neighbor, your parents, cleaning aunties!), be it on Valentine's Day or on other days. Sometimes we're 'too-used-with-each-other' and take other people for granted. It's also a chance to thank God for the love around us. You know...It's so good to feel loved by other people, so yup, let's show our love to the people around us :):)

job hunting

Finally I sent four more CVs.

from the ones that I sent on Chinese New Year, I got 1 rejection, the rest no reply.
Happy job hunting!

new motivation to get a job soon:
to go to Brazil in 2013!!! hehehehe

Actually, I wonder whether it's possible to do master's in research and work part-time as therapist at the same time. Hmmm... but I guess it depends on my thesis. I must do my thesis well because I hope that my supervisor wants to be my supervisor again if I do master's research here. Hmmm...

February! - 3 more months to end of university life

Rushing here and there.
Thesis-thesis-thesis-thesis

running out of time!

Thank God for the training today, I feel really fresh now!! :D Yeay!!! (though tomorrow all parts of body will be aching, hahaha)

Thai module is getting more difficult.

Unlike what I predicted, I fell asleep in Japanese Studies class (my fault, not lecturer's fault)

Adolescent psychology is also interesting. I like the tutorial more than the lecture.

Animal behavior module is also still interesting, especially because I can use the background knowledge in psychology.

Two questions that I don't really want to hear now: "Have you got any jobs already?" or "Do you still want to do postgrad?"

Pilar's advice: give deadline to myself. Pray :)
Mom's advice: send 2 CVs per day. Don't think too much now, focus on thesis. It's ok to work first and start applying again while you work. Mom scolded me, "If you yourself don't know what you want, how do you expect other people to help you??"
Advice from myself: Hang in there :) Thesis mode is on already, good job! Thank God :) But manage your time better and please DO ORGANIZE your data analysis. Now everything is still unconnected bones.

What God told me today: Don't feel bored asking me the same thing.

Oh ya, I have interesting story. This morning I really felt that my guardian angel woke me up for mass!!! Unlike previous mornings, when I heard the alarm, it was like, "hah? Why did the alarm rang?" Then I felt so fresh and awake. I told myself, "Oh noo..no excuse not to go," I forced myself to sleep again, but I was still awake.

But I smiled :) So happy to receive the communion today. Thanks my guardian angel :):)
